Frequently asked questions
How does this plate lookup work?
Enter a US license plate number and state. We return the vehicle's 17-character VIN from DMV cross-reference data. The lookup is free — a full vehicle history report is optional and starts at $4.50.
Which states are supported?
All 50 US states plus the District of Columbia. Coverage is strongest for standard-issue plates; novelty / brand-new / specialty plates may not resolve.
Is plate lookup legal?
License plates are public information in the US. Plate-to-VIN lookups for informational purposes are legal nationwide. Using the VIN for stalking, harassment, or commercial data resale violates federal law (DPPA).
What if the plate doesn't resolve?
Most often it's a typo — double-check against the physical plate. Brand-new plates (under 48 hours old) and specialty / novelty plates may not index. Fallback: ask the seller for the VIN directly.
